Jeep Conversion Progress

It’s been a delayed project these last few weeks/months because work has picked up. I’ve been to Austin 3 times in the last 6 weeks or so and I just haven’t caught up on everything else going on in my life to have time to work on the XJ. However, snow is coming and we were able to spend some time Sunday working on the Jeep.

My dad was able to get the t-case separated from the transmission by cutting through the end of the t-case and cutting off the studs. Unfortunately we had already destroyed the casing on the transfer case so I won’t be able to resell it. We worked on getting the holes drilled out so that all of the corrosion was out of them and the bolts would fit. We had to fight the one hole for a while because a chunk of the stud just wouldn’t fall out. However, we finally got it to pop out of there and were able to dry fit the transfer case on the back of the 5-speed.

Now that the transfer case was ready, we started prepping the clutch and components. We got the clutch mounted and was about to start lifting the transmission into place but my dad just couldn’t get the idea out of his head that we were missing something by the pilot bearing. We pulled the clutch off and started Googling for some information. After a few minutes of searching we finally found what we were missing – there is a bushing that goes around the pinion bearing (pinion bearing with sleeve) on the end of the crank shaft for the manual transmissions. Luckily a local parts store had one in stock and we picked it up. However, it was getting late so progress is to be continued.

  1. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and
visual appeal. I must say you have done a fantastic job with this.
Also, the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox. Excellent
    Blog!
