HP ProCurve 1800-24G VLAN Configuration

This was a giant pain in the rear to get configured appropriately as no one apparently actually uses these things anymore. But, alas, I have (finally) got this configured and working. Let’s start with the basics that had me all confused:

Trunks

In just about every switch other than the ProCurve 1800 a Trunk is a port which has access to several VLANs. In this switch, however, that is not the case. Trunks according to the HP ProCruve are similar to EtherChannel (I believe) in the CISCO world. So, you pretty much ignore the Trunk section of the config.

The Setup

Login to your ProCurve. If you don’t remember the username and password it’s really simple to reset to factory, where the default IP address would be 192.168.2.10 (unplug the switch, plug network cable into Port 1 and connect it to Port 2, plug the switch back in and wait 40 seconds, unplug one end of the network cable).

Once you’re in the switch you’ll go to the VLANs section. In there you type in a VLAN number and click the Add button. If you’re on the latest firmware you can change the management VLAN away from VLAN 1 by going into the system settings.

Now that you have your different VLANs created you’ll want to select one of them and click Modify. That will bring you to this page:VLAN Setup

This is where you can start to identify the “Trunk” port that will have access to your router. I’ve decided that port 1 will be my trunk port that goes back to my core switch. I also want port 2-6 to be on VLAN 10 so I have check the box for them. You’ll want to do this for each of your VLANs. Pick the ports you want to be associated with that VLAN then also pick whatever port you have chosen to be your Trunk (in this case, port 1). So, for example, my VLAN 40 looks like this:

VLAN 40

Once you have all the ports associated with the appropriate VLAN you then go to the VLAN Port Config button under the VLANs header. This is where it took a lot of check and testing. Here you will want to put the PVID as the primary VLAN (the one you assigned to that port). For the port you have selected to be your Trunk port you’ll pick “Tagged Only” and every port will have “VLAN aware enabled.” So it should look like this:

VLAN Port Config

That’s it. Once that is all configured you should have all the VLANs setup. This will require a router to be properly configured as well.
